What's it like to be an Excavator Operator?
Excavator Operators are in charge of operating an excavator or similar equipment to dig, lift and move materials within construction sites. Daily tasks may involve general maintenance, adhering to safety protocols and manoeuvring the machinery in line with site plans. Excavator Operators are usually employed by construction or mining companies, infrastructure agencies or landscaping businesses.
Tasks and duties
- Operating an excavator to dig holes, lift heavy objects and compact earth.
- Performing equipment inspections to ensure machines are operating at peak efficiency and safety.
- Carrying out minor repairs and maintenance tasks on the excavator to prevent breakdowns during operations.
- Coordinating with other construction workers to ensure the project is proceeding according to plan.
- Maintaining a clean and safe working environment, which includes cleaning the equipment and the worksite when necessary.
- Understanding and following job site safety regulations and procedures.
- Reading and interpreting site plans and blueprints to guide the excavating process.
