What's it like to be an Electrical Engineer?
An Electrical Engineer (Mataaro Pūhiko) designs, constructs and maintains electrical systems. They create engineering plans for the distribution and management of electricity and oversee tests to ensure electrical systems are safe and fault-free.
Tasks and duties
- Developing new systems that use electrical power.
- Installing and testing electrical systems and processes.
- Using software to plan, design and improve electrical systems.
- Performing detailed calculations to develop manufacturing, construction and installation standards and specifications.
In addition to planning electrical systems, Electrical Engineers are expected to calculate costs for projects and create reports. They often work for construction, telecommunications, energy and transport companies, and in other industries including IT and manufacturing.
How to become an Electrical Engineer
You need to complete a four-year bachelor degree to become an Electrical Engineer. Registration with the national board is also required.
Complete a Bachelor of Engineering with Honours. This usually takes four years of full-time study.
Register with the Electrical Workers Registration Board to get your Limited Certificate.
Secure an internship to build experience.
Become a member of Engineering New Zealand. You can become a member while studying.
With five or more years of industry experience, you can apply to become a Chartered Professional Engineer with Engineering New Zealand.
