What's it like to be a Sonographer?
Sonographers work in a specialised branch of medical imaging. They operate ultrasound scanners to create high frequency sound waves that produce visual images of internal parts of the body to assist with medical diagnoses. Sonographers need a detailed knowledge of human anatomy, pathophysiology, technology, and physics.
Tasks and duties
- Explaining procedures to patients, answering questions and ensuring patient welfare throughout the exam.
- Examining referrals from Doctors and ensuring they are current.
- Operating ultrasound equipment to ensure the interior images are clear.
- Positioning patients, equipment and screens for maximum exposure and clarity.
- Selecting the images needed for diagnostic purposes.
- Writing reports for Doctors.
How to become a Sonographer
To become a Sonographer, you will need both undergraduate and postgraduate qualifications.
Complete a three-year bachelor degree in medical imaging, or a related health science degree.
Complete a Postgraduate Diploma in Health Sciences (Ultrasound). You will need to gain a clinical training position in an ultrasound clinic before entering the postgraduate diploma.
